Origins of "Red Lion " as a Pub Name
Pubs with animal names such as The Lion generally refer to hunting. When combined with colours, eg. The Red Lion, this usually refers to heraldry. A red lion was on the badge of John of Gaunt, for example, and is one of the most common charges in coats of arms.
